A Costly kind of Love

by: Arlyn Amboy BBrC 3-1d

I had an acl injury when I was in gradeschool, I got it during a taaekwondo match, and just recently my favorite volleyball player (Laurence ann latigay) tore hers during a tune-up game, that is why she’s not the guest player of baste this conference of v-league. Bottom line? It’s one thing that an athlete and even fans hate! Although most of the time it’s nobody’s fault, acl is one hell of a nightmare!

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments of the human knee. It is the most commonly injured knee ligament and is commonly damaged by athletes. The ACL is often torn during sudden dislocation, torsion, or hyperextension of the knee. Commonly patients report hearing or feeling a "pop", but pain at the time of ACL rupture can vary from moderate to severe, however, strong painkillers are normally needed. In the hours following ACL rupture, however, most patients notice progressive swelling (usually due to bleeding of the vessels along the torn ACL). This swelling generally is quite painful, but can be minimized by icing the knee. ACL tears typically occur in sports where cutting, twisting, and turning are common.

Treatment for an ACL injury can either be nonsurgical or surgical depending on the extent of the injury. Nonsurgical options may be used if the knee cartilage is undamaged, the knee proves to be stable during typical daily activities, and if the patient has no desire to ever again participate in high-risk activities (activities involving cutting, pivoting, or jumping). If the nonsurgical option is recommended, the doctor may recommend physical therapy, wearing a knee brace, or adapting some typical activities. With the use of these nonsurgical options a patient can expect to be back to normal daily activity within one month. However, most ACL-deficient athletes conclude that their knee continues to feel unstable, again confirming the important role of the ACL in normal knee stability.

Surgical options may be used if the knee gives way during typical daily activities, showing functional instability, or if the patient is unable to refrain from participating in high-risk activities ever again. Reconstructive surgery may also be recommended if there is damage to the meniscus (cartilage). This surgery is completed using arthroscopic techniques. There is also an option for an autograft to be done using a chosen tendon.. Physical therapy must be completed in three phases after the surgery is completed. With the use of the surgical treatment option, rehabilitation included, a patient can expect to be returning to previous and desired levels of activity in six to nine months or longer.

So before any game or training make sure to warm up and do stretching. But since it is unexpected and UNWANTED, just play the game and do it for the love of sport! Remember: Go hard! Or go home!

Brain Damaging Habits

by Marianne B. Enriquez

The brain is the most complex organ of the human body. That part of the central nervous system that is located within the cranium or skull. The brain functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. But people ignore the importance of our brains. By simply doing the following negligence, it can harm someone’s life.

1. No Breakfast

People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Overeating

It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking

It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar Consumption

Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution

The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation

Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping

Sleeping with the head covered, increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness

Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts

Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely

Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

Taking care is simple. Act now! Do a little, get a lot!

FAST FOOD, PROS AND CONS

by Marianne B. Enriquez

The pervasive growth of fast food restaurants here and abroad just proves the clamor of people for their products. But are fast foods beneficial to our health? Are they good or bad?

The most evident advantage of fast food is that it saves time. In this world of fast-paced life, what could you ask for in a fast food? At the end of a very hard working day, a burger or a pizza could be godsend. It saves energy from buying ingredients in the supermarket and preparing food at the kitchen. And also, it is much cheaper to eat at fast food restaurants than to buy and prepare your own food.

On the other hand, the greatest disadvantage of fast food is that it has adverse effect to one’s health. Fast food contains higher amounts of salt, fats and calories than that of a home-cook food. It is an important contributor of obesity here and abroad. The excess fats and calories we take up in these fast foods are not completely used that causes cardiovascular diseases. With obesity come other problems like high blood presure and diseases of the joints.

Upon stating some of the pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages of fast food, it is now up to you what to choose. In the end, it is still our decision. Learn to weigh which could be of greater beneficial to you and your health. Remember, too much of something can be very harmful. There is way too much to sacrifice if you get in the wrong track. Stay healthy. Stay happy.

FIBER RICH FOODS, INCLUDE THEM IN YOUR DIET

Most of the nutritionists blame the lack of fiber in our diets for the increasing amount of heart patients and growing numbers of people who suffer from bowel disorders. This may be true because white bread, cake, sugar, salt and processed foods have become predominant in our diets. We also eat more meat nowadays and all of these foods lack the necessary fiber to move the food through our digestive tracts and through our stomach quickly.

his means that food is sitting in the stomach and bowels for a longer period, which could be why there has been an increase in cancers to these parts of the body. People who eat too much processed foods instead of wholegrain, fruits and vegetables may be at risk of suffering from obesity and other disorders too.

Fiber is essential in our diets and to the well being of our health. Fiber rich food items basically include all bran cereals, beans, peas and cabbage. There are also some high fiber fruits which intake can lead to an overall enhancement of one's health.

As you increase the intake of fiber in your diet, you should also accompany this with a good consumption of water. Also, increasing the intake of foods high in fiber is better than using fiber supplements. However, eating wisely and healthily can make you feel better without the threat of any illness.

WATER, A NECESSITY

Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it, humans would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in our body's water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen.

Here are some of the simple ways on how water helps us:
  • Water serves as a lubricant
  • Water forms the base for saliva
  • Water forms the fluids that surround the joints.
  • Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration.
  • Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste- the best detox agent.
  • Regulates metabolism
We should always make sure that the quality of the water should be just as important as the quantity. Drinking water should always be clean and free of contaminants to ensure proper health and wellness.

Off to a Good Start

by: Arlyn B. Amboy

Before we see our favorite players strutt their stuff in the court, they have some things that they do. Most people tend to take this for granted when in fact it is one of the most important things in sports or some activities... Warm-up exercises. It can be as simple as a brisk walk or a slow jog which should be completed prior to stretching and more strenuous exercise. Its objective is to raise total body temperature and muscle temperature to prepare the entire body for vigorous activity.

The two main purpose of this is to enhance performance and of course prevent injuries. Warm-up increase the blood circulation in order to raise both the general body and the deep muscle temperatures, it helps heat up the muscles, ligaments and tendons in preparation for more vigorous activity. A proper warm-up provide many benefits due to elevated temperatures associated with it. The likelihood of injury is reduced. Athletic performance can be improved. The warm-up increases muscle efficiency, reduces potential for muscle pulls, improves reaction time and improves the speed of movement of muscled and ligaments.

“Proper warm-up can also help reduce the severity of post-exercise muscle soreness. The higher temperatures and increased blood flow resulting from warm-up are important for delivery of oxygen to the muscles and for prevention of build-up of unwanted waste products which can lead to muscle soreness.” (http://www.fundamentalsoccer.com/members/TOUSI.html)

Although some people usually mistaken stretching for warm-up, the difference is it is important to warm-up first before stretching, because if one stretches the muscles without prior warm-up, the muscles are cold and are more prone to injury, such as muscle tear or strain.

So before enjoying your favorite sport be sure to be equipped with your gears and do some warm-up and be the best athlete you can be!

Team Providence

by ALBERT R. SISON, JR.

To Prove. To Provide. Last year, a small group of communication students held their Communication Campaign last year to a small, unknown school in Antipolo. It was just a requirement for a major subject on our 2nd year 1st semester that unknowingly will lead us to helping little children in the every best way that we can. At first, we wanted to conduct a free medical and dental check up, but because of the schedule given to us by the school conflicting to the schedule of the doctors and dentists that we've contacted, it seemed impossible for us to continue this deed. It didn't hit us that much until one doctor particularly told our one member that why would we do this kind of campaign if we are not medical or dental students having their practice. Finally, we have decided to just have a HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAM for the students of Cabading Elementary School. We felt that it will be a great help for them since their school doesn't have concrete buildings, only made of wood and bamboo, and also, they are beside a forest. With the help of Mrs. Elvira Teston, the princpal of Cabading Elementary School, a final date was set. On October 3, 2008, The Health Awareness Program of Team Providence was held. Arriving early, we set up the tarpaulin and other posters given to us by red cross that helps in providing awareness on dengue and other health issues and problems. At 9:00 p.m., the program started, 50 plus students were present at that time, all enthusiast about the event. Mr. Albeno Del Monte, the Health Coordinator of Department of Education, Antipolo branch, gladly offered his services by being our speaker for the event. He talked about certain sickness that the students can get from school or their very homes. he also talked about health awareness and certain tips on how to prevent sickness. After the talk, we gladly presented to the principal and the students the medicine and vitamins that we are donating to the school care of UNILAB. We are very fortunate for having them as our sponsors. The event ended with fun and games for the students. It was very fulfilling to see this young, unfortunate kids smiling, having fun, and satisfied. It was a great feat and achievement for us who are just students to help and contribute to the health awareness of this kids. The campaign experience was a lot of fun, but having to help other kids adds a lot of satisfaction.

Rabies Prevention?

Rabies remains to be one of the most fatal viruses not just in the Philippines, but in the whole world. In the Philippines alone, according to the Department of Health, 200-500 Filipinos die every year because of rabies making the Philippines the top six country that has the highest number of cases of rabies in the whole world. But what is rabies and do we only get it by being bitten by dogs? is a viral neuroinvasive disease that causes acute encaphalitis (inflammation of the brain ) in warm-blooded animals. It is zoonotic (i.e. transmitted by animals), most commonly by a bite from an infected animal but occasionally by other forms of contact. Rabies is almost invariably fatal if post-exposure prophylaxis is not administered prior to the onset of severe symptoms. Early-stage symptoms of rabies are malaise, headache and fever, later progressing to more serious ones, including acute pain, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, depression and inability to swallow water. Finally, the patient may experience periods of mania and lethargy, followed by coma. The primary cause of death is usually respiratory insufficiency.

Last month, I and some of my class
mates conducted a research about "tandok" or the native way of removing rabies. They are usually found in provinces here in the Philippines like Tarlac. Before they use "sungay ng kalabaw" but now, due to technology, they've created a somehow medical device. With this device, they prick you, and the device will suck the blood with rabies. They said that the color and texture of the blood is different from a normal blood. We tried to interview a doctor and we are very fortunate to have Dr. Leendon LeeSuy, a Medical Specialist of Department of Health. He told us that it will still be better to go to doctors and have a medical way of preventing virus which is having anti-rabies injections since it is proven unlike with "tandok" where in there is still no medical and scientific evidence that it really works. He also stressed out that Rabies cannot be seen by our naked eye and those blood that they were talking about are merely clotted blood.

At the end of the day, It really depends on a person if he will believe in Tandok, and it depends if he will believe that the rabies will be prevented, it's all about his faith.

Sweetest Downfall

by: Arlyn Amboy

Cake, ice cream, pastries, chocolate and most of all, our favorite... oh yes, that plain steamed white rice. These are the things we reall want to thank the Guy above for! And if money is no consideration, we would enjoy them as much as we can (but of course everything that is too much is bad) But not for people with diabetes, they are doomed to as much as possible avoid these heavenly stuff for let's say a very long time.

I got a good friend of mine and and a blockmate as well whose mom has acquired diabetes, Tita Lita Legaspi, 57, found out of her disease 2 years ago. She's now maintaining some drugs and a diet to keep her from the complications, and best of all beat the old disease.

"Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a set of related diseases in the body that cannot regulate the amount of sugar (specifically, glucose) in the blood. Type 1 diabetes:The body stops producing insulin or produces too little insulin to regulate blood glucose level. Type 2 diabetes: The pancreas secretes insulin, but the body is partially or completely unable to use the resistance by secreting more and more insulin." http://www.emedicinehealth.com/diabetes/article

Right now Tita Lita have to visit her doctor twice a year for Hematology, blood chemistry and urinalysis to check sugar's presence in her blood. Fasting Blood Sugar or Fasting Plasma Glucose test for sugar level. She also has to keep her diet that includes fruits, a cup of rice for lunch and low-fat wheat bread for dinner. Water theraphy is also advised. It demands avoidance of TOO much eating, sugary foods, and those carbo-packed stuff. She's also taking some drugs and milk supplement that for advertising purposes I won't mention.

Good thing her family is pretty rich, I mean supportive. They remind her of the diet whenever she forgets. Now I know why there's always cake for merienda everytime I go there.

An Exercise a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

by Marianne B. Enriquez

With the advent of technology, different tools, machines and utensils exploded on how people’s life would become easier to live by. Unfortunately, with this, many people today are not physically fit. There are those who would rush into their television sets as soon as they get up in the morning to watch their favorite show rather than taking a bit of stretching. Some would even choose to play their all time favorite computer game than going to the streets or courts and play basketball. And some would even love to use the escalators in malls that make them downright lazy. People nowadays, neglects how important one’s physical health and fitness is.

Kristine Marie Maranan, a friend of mine and at the same time my classmate in college, is an avid gym-goer. At the age of 20, she is engaged in working out for her self improvement. She is working out for over three months at Ladies First Fitness Center in Marikina, City. This gym is a “ladies-only facility” where all women can workout in a comfortable atmosphere. She visits her gym for about thrice a week and at the same time, manages to attend her schooling. Then I got to know and how she handles these and what motivates her to enter the world of fitness.

“At first, I really just wanted to loose weight. It's like forever nalang akong mataba.. and like everyone's saying that you're so taba! And I wanted to change that and prove something.”

But, she came to realize how really important being physically fit is.

“Going to the gym isn’t all about loosing weight; instead, it’s more of feeling better about me.”

True then, exercising has got a lot of benefits – better self-esteem, better emotional health and better physical fitness. On the other hand, not exercising can cause people to develop certain chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type two diabetes.

Running away from exercising is no solution, as it is eventually a harmful choice to your own well being in the long run. Instead explore what exercises you can do to keep healthy. And to your sheer surprise, there are so many simple activities you can do that can amount to exercising!

WATERloo

by Arlyn Amboy

In a very hot day nothing beats a glass of ice-cold water to quench your thirst! But drinking water isn’t just about that. Hydration is said to be the “incorporation of molecular water into a complex molecule with the molecules or units of another species; the complex may be held together by relatively weak forces or may exist as a definite compound” or just replenishing the lost fluid in our body. It’s very important to hydrate our body to prevent migraine, nausea, muscle weakening, blurred vision and dry skin. Water has ions which is body’s electrical energy source. Through hydration our body absorbs the minerals from the liquid and releases the waste and become our sweat and urine.

8 glasses of water a day is needed to maintain proper body temperature. It can also be juice, tea, or coffee. But if the weather is pretty hot, it is advisable to take more than 8 glasses. Athletes on the other hand need to hydrate more often for they sweat more.

A lot of people tend to take this fact for granted, and what’s more dangerous is that, effects of dehydration occur when your body is already sold out! Though there is such thing as hyperdration or over-hydrated still it’s better that we keep ourselves with water than be hydrated.

So next time you go out in the street or while playing your favorite sport be sure to be armed and bring a bottle of water.

healthy living, healthy eating

The food we eat is made up of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, micro nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and water. They are essential for proper function and metabolism of the different processes of our human body. But not all delicious foods are good for our body. They may be delicious but are devoid of the essential nutrients needed by the body. Eating unhealthy foods like junk foods, salty foods and condiments (bagoong dried fish, salted egg, chips, soy sauce, fish sauce, vetsin and broth cubes can affect our kidney and may later on lead to renal diseases. So how can we have healthy living without sacrificing our wants of delicious food? Aside from drinking the right amount of water everyday, there are certain recipes that will teach you how to prepare dishes that are good for our body. The National Kidney and Transplant Institute actually released a Renal cookbook that contains different recipes of soups, vegetables, fish and seafoods, chicken, pork, beef, egg, noodles, and salads and pastries. This will help not only those who have kidney problems, but also those who enjoy eating meat and does not want sacrificing their wants. Fulfilling every want is not bad, just as long as we know how to control it.

Health is wealth? or wealth is health?

by Arlyn Amboy

I know it’s a cliché but it’s absolutely true! That “health is wealth.” But these days you have to be wealthy to be healthy, in fact there are a lot of products in the market right now that promise longer life; healthier body and stuff like that. Some are made from berries, barleys, fruits, vegetables, crops, seeds and what not. But the thing is these stuff are too pricey to keep as mainstay in our necessity list. But don’t fret! You don’t actually have to spend a lot to be fit and healthy! And you might actually find them in your pantry!
Just like garlic. It is rich in antioxidants that help to protect the body against damaging "free radicals". It also helps prevent atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, as well as reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke. Just add them to your favorite meal everyday and you can enjoy your social service benefits longer!
Another is the bell pepper it actually has 7x more vitamin C than orange! And the riper it is the higher the vitamin content! It’s also rich in vitamin A for good eyesight.
Lastly ginger, it boosts our immune system and may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells.
Feeling good is looking good! Don’t also forget to always eat healthy foods! Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins; minerals and fiber which is good for digestion thus weight control. Hydrate yourself every now and then, and engage yourself in sports. It’ll make your body stronger and also keep you fit. Finally, have a positive outlook in life! Always smile so that you don’t just make yourself feel good, you can also make someone else’s day complete.
Remember that the only way to make things right is to live as long and as well as we possibly can!

WELLNESS AND FITNESS

The months of August and September are the period when students of different colleges and universities opt to celebrate their sports festival. Usually it lasts for a week full of excitement where everyone is aimed to promote camaraderie, unity and sportsmanship among sports aficionados and sports enthusiasts.

A high school friend of mine brought me to the launching of the sports fest of Centro EscolarUniversity (CEU) last August 12, 2009, where he is currently studying. There I witnessed how different colleges of the said university participated in the event. There were parades of the varsities in each sport fields. The most anticipating part was the field demonstration of different colleges that showed various steps in exercising. They gave significance on the physical fitness aspect during the event.

Sports fests bring excellent outcomes for the students not just for the physical fitness it exudes but also the camaraderie it builds within them.
